The Flock

Every chicken at Fort Fluffy Butt has a name, a personality, and a story.

Basil

Basil is a Black non-bearded Silkie with a heart of gold and absolutely no volume control. Completely silly and a little… special, Basil can often be found sprinting around the yard screaming at absolutely nothing, fueled by massive FOMO and boundless enthusiasm for life.

She is incredibly sweet and trusting, always happy to be near people, but she also lives up to her legendary nickname “Cana-Basil.” Basil has an unfortunate love for meat and feathers — most famously proven when she once ate another chicken’s head feathers down to the nubbins. A true story. No regrets.

Basil was one of the very last chicks ever hatched at the rescue before Fort Fluffy Butt officially became strictly rescue-only. While her arrival didn’t cause the change, she proudly represents the end of an era — and the beginning of a flock that’s just a little louder, weirder, and more lovable because she’s in it.

Bee

Bee is a Black Australorp with a quiet presence and a soft, watchful nature. Shy and reserved, she prefers to observe from the edges of the flock, taking everything in before stepping forward. Bee isn’t one to demand attention, but she has a calm steadiness that makes her especially endearing to those who take the time to notice her.

She came to Fort Fluffy Butt from a shelter alongside Mocha and Cappuccino (New Hampshire Reds) and her sister, who suffered from chronic bumblefoot. The group was surrendered when their previous owners downsized. Her sister was lovingly named Bumble because of her condition, and naturally, Bee’s name soon followed — together, they were Bumble Bee.

Though Bumble has sadly passed away, Bee remains with us, carrying on quietly in her sister’s absence. She is a gentle reminder that not all flock members are loud or bold — some leave their mark simply by being steady, resilient, and quietly loved.

Big Silk

Big Silk is a Frizzled Grey Bearded Silkie and quite possibly the sweetest chicken to ever exist. She actively seeks out people and will demand to be held, especially on cold days when she can nuzzle into your arms and settle in like she belongs there. If she even leaves the coop at all on snowy days, she’s quietly chatting the entire time — soft chirps and gentle churtles, like an old grandma hen telling you everything is going to be okay.

She came to Fort Fluffy Butt after being found by animal control alongside Lil Frizz and taken to the humane society. When they arrived, both were suffering from a severe infestation of depluming mites — microscopic parasites that live inside the feather shaft, destroying feathers from the inside and slowly draining the bird’s nutrients. Left untreated, these mites are fatal.

Big Silk and Lil Frizz were nearly bald when they first came to us. With proper treatment, care, and time, they made a full recovery. Today, Big Silk is fully feathered, healthy, and living her best life — wrapped in fluff, love, and as many cuddles as she can convince you to give her.

Bleu

Bleu is a Lakenvelder with a big voice and a very cautious heart. Shy and extremely skittish, she prefers to keep a safe distance — but silence has never been her style. Bleu wants to be near, especially during feeding time, and can usually be found on the outskirts of the flock yelling her thoughts to anyone who will listen while carefully watching from afar.

Though fear keeps her at arm’s length, Bleu is slowly finding her confidence. Month by month, she’s been inching closer, testing trust at her own pace. Every small step forward feels like a big win, and she’s proving that bravery doesn’t always look bold — sometimes it looks like showing up anyway.

Bleu came to Fort Fluffy Butt from a shelter alongside Gouda, our only white chicken (a Rhode Island White). Whether they were surrendered together or picked up as strays is unclear, but their bond was obvious. Gouda earned her name first, and naturally, Bleu followed — a perfect cheese pairing that stuck.

Brahma Mama

Brahma Mama is a Dark Brahma and the undisputed head hen from day one (and our logo mascot). A quiet, gentle giant by nature, she rarely raises her voice — but when she does, the flock listens. If a new hen challenges her trusted “hench men” (Jazzy, Znork, Kelenia, and Senerae), Brahma Mama will step in, break her silence, and swiftly remind everyone where the order stands.

She is one of the very first chickens ever raised at Fort Fluffy Butt, part of the original four alongside Znork, Senerae, and Kelenia. Raised from baby chicks, Brahma Mama has always carried herself with calm confidence, but her name was truly earned during the first predator attack the flock ever faced.

When two full-grown raccoons attacked, Brahma Mama and Senerae fought them off until help could arrive. She came out completely unscathed — and so did every other flock member. From that moment on, her original name, Mahalia, was retired for good. She became Brahma Mama, protector, leader, and the backbone of the flock.

Daisy

Daisy is a Buff Orpington driven almost entirely by curiosity. If something is happening, she must be involved. You can’t take a step, open a door, or look remotely suspicious without Daisy appearing instantly to investigate. She is, without question, the most curious chicken we have ever met.

Her favorite morning routine is standing at the fence with a perfect line of sight into our bedroom and screaming once she sees movement. Once she knows we’re awake, she enjoys yelling until morning treats are delivered — a system that works very well in her favor.

Daisy came to Fort Fluffy Butt with her sister, Princess Peach, after being surrendered to a shelter for supposedly being “mean” to other chickens. We’ve never seen an ounce of aggression from either of them. Instead, they’ve been nothing but social, friendly, and endlessly entertaining — proof that sometimes chickens just need the right flock (and a little patience) to truly shine.

Ellie Shellproper

Ellie Shellproper is a Booted Bantam who lives life on the quieter side. Shy and skittish, she’s so small and silent that you often don’t realize she’s nearby at all. Ellie has a talent for blending into the background — you’ll look around wondering where she is, only to discover she’s been there the whole time.

She was surrendered to a shelter after being bullied by her previous flock, and that experience clearly shaped her cautious nature. Ellie tends to keep her distance from most chickens and people, choosing safety and space over attention.

The one exception is her best friend, Shellie Shellproper. Though they didn’t arrive together, the two instantly bonded — both rare bantam (tiny) chickens who seemed to recognize a kindred spirit in one another. Together, they’re inseparable, quietly navigating the flock side by side and proving that sometimes the smallest chickens form the strongest connections. (See Shellie for the 'Shellproper' last name origin story)

Elsa

Elsa is a Silkie/Polish mix with a cautious nature and a voice all her own. Skittish by default, she prefers to keep her distance — but when Elsa is interested in you, there’s no mistaking it. She’ll lock eyes and let out a very specific, unmistakable cluck-call that makes it clear you’ve caught her attention.

She’s one of our earlier flock members, brought home as a young pullet from a ranch in Cañon City, Colorado. Elsa was named after Elsa from 1883, a name that suits her perfectly in both grace and presence.

When the sunlight hits her feathers, Elsa transforms. Her plumage shimmers with deep purples, rich blues, and flashes of emerald green — a true spectrum of jewel tones. She’s less a chicken and more a walking gemstone, quietly glowing as she moves through the flock.

Gouda

Gouda is a Rhode Island White with a curious, friendly nature and an easy confidence that makes her instantly likable. Unlike her sister Bleu, Gouda has been open to human interaction from day one. She’s not one for cuddles, but she’s always happy to accept a gentle pet on the back before going about her business.

She arrived at Fort Fluffy Butt alongside Bleu after the two ended up at a shelter together. Whether they were surrendered as a pair or brought in as strays remains unclear, but their bond was unmistakable. Gouda earned her name first as the flock’s only white chicken — and naturally, Bleu’s name soon followed, making them a perfectly matched cheese duo.

While Bleu tends to keep her distance and shout from the sidelines, Gouda serves as her steady counterpart — curious, calm, and quietly comfortable being close. Together, they balance each other out, each moving at her own pace while staying firmly connected.

Jackie

Jackie is a Black Sex Link who fully embodies don’t mess with me energy. She’s sweet — but only on her terms. Jackie has very clear boundaries, and if you cross them, she won’t hesitate to issue a warning… or a well-placed peck. Consent is important, and Jackie expects it to be respected.

She’s often one of the first chickens to meet you at the gate, confidently stepping forward to see what you’re doing — and just as quickly chasing you right back out once she’s decided the interaction is over. Friendly, fearless, and firm, she keeps everyone on their toes.

Jackie was one of the last chicks ever raised at Fort Fluffy Butt, arriving alongside Basil. During her teenage phase, her attitude was so intense that we genuinely thought she might be a rooster. That’s when she earned the nickname “Jackle,” a title that stuck as a reminder of her famously testy youth and her no-nonsense personality.

Jazzy

Jazzy is a Partridge Cochin with the heart of a sweetheart and the authority of Brahma Mama’s trusted enforcer. As one of her head hen’s loyal minions, Jazzy has zero tolerance for funny business from the lower ranks. Calm and gentle by nature, she still knows exactly when to step in and keep the peace.

She’s another true gentle giant — loving when she chooses to be — though holding her is less like cuddling a chicken and more like carrying around a ten-pound dumbbell. Heavy, solid, and endlessly fluffy, Jazzy is impossible to ignore.

Jazzy was part of the second batch of the original chicks and has been with us since nearly day one. Her massive stature and legendary fluffy booty quickly earned her the nickname “Jazzy Phat Nasty,” a title she wears with pride and absolute confidence.

Kelenia

Kelenia is a Cinnamon Queen with a curious spirit and a softly skittish edge. She’s not one for pets, but she also won’t run from you — content to stay nearby, watching with interest. Her wonderfully floppy comb seems to mirror her personality perfectly: relaxed, a little uneven, and full of quiet charm.

Named after the scientific name of a favorite houseplant, Kelenia’s story is one of pure resilience. During a raccoon attack, she was pulled out of the coop by her head just as help was arriving. We truly believed she wouldn’t survive. Despite severe injuries and blood loss, we couldn’t give up on her without giving her a chance.

Against every expectation, Kelenia made it through the night. What followed was weeks of constant, hands-on care indoors — including carefully hydrating her with a dropper, day in and day out. Slowly, she recovered completely. Today, the only sign she ever came so close to death is a small scar over her left eye — a quiet reminder of her strength and determination.

Lil Frizz

Lil Frizz is a Frizzle Serama powered almost entirely by S.P.U.N.K. She may only weigh a few ounces and is easily the tiniest chicken in the flock (and possibly alive), but her size has never slowed her down. Fiercely resilient and endlessly determined, Lil Frizz knows she can’t out-muscle the big chickens — so instead, she out-waits them. Patient and strategic, she’ll hang back for days until the perfect opening appears… then swoop in like she planned it all along.

She came to Fort Fluffy Butt alongside Big Silk after being found as a stray and taken in by animal control. Both were suffering from a severe infestation of depluming mites, microscopic parasites that live inside the feather shaft and slowly drain a bird’s nutrients. Lil Frizz was in especially rough shape, malnourished and struggling with a pronounced head tilt as a result of her condition.

With treatment, time, and careful support, Lil Frizz made a full recovery. Her head tilt completely resolved, her feathers grew back, and her fiery personality returned in full force. Today, she’s healthy, confident, and just as spunky as ever — living proof that resilience isn’t measured in size.

Mocha

Mocha is a New Hampshire Red and the flock’s self-appointed enforcer — often lovingly referred to as our resident evil queen. While she is loved dearly, Mocha makes it very clear that you do not want to end up on her bad side. Positioned squarely in the middle ranks, her insecurities sometimes show through as… enthusiastic rule enforcement, especially when absolutely no enforcement was required.

She came to Fort Fluffy Butt through a shelter rescue alongside Bee, Bumble, and her sister, Cappuccino. The group was surrendered when their previous owners downsized, and the bond between the sisters was strong from the beginning. Sadly, Cappuccino has since passed away, and Mocha’s personality noticeably shifted after her loss.

Since then, Mocha has carried herself with sharper edges and a stronger need for control, as if guarding what remains of her world. Beneath the attitude is a chicken shaped by loss, navigating the flock in her own complicated way — proof that even the toughest hens have softer stories behind them.

Mutty

Mutty is a Green Queen with a lifelong commitment to personal space. Skittish since day one — even as a tiny chick — she has taken her time deciding that humans aren’t entirely terrifying. After three years of daily interaction, she’s finally warming up, proving that trust, when it comes, is something truly earned.

She’s one of the very first chickens ever raised at Fort Fluffy Butt, arriving alongside Jazzy and growing up as part of the original flock. As soon as her incredible face feathers came in — complete with the most fabulous mutton chops — her original name, Amerial, was immediately retired.

Now she is Mutty, also known as Mutt Mutt, and she wears her name as confidently as her signature facial fluff. Quiet, watchful, and unmistakably herself, Mutty reminds us that some bonds take time — and are all the more special because of it.

Othokent

Othokent is a Partridge Welsummer with a deeply cautious spirit and one of the most fearful temperaments we’ve ever taken in. Skittish around other chickens and anything that moves, she startled easily and struggled to feel safe — except with us. From the beginning, she showed an unusual trust toward people, even while everything else in her world felt overwhelming.

When Othokent first arrived, she spent days inside the coop, barely venturing out. When she finally did, she would stand motionless on a tire for hours at a time, watching the flock from a distance, unsure how — or if — she fit in. Slowly, with patience and careful acclimation, she found her place among the others.

She was found as a stray by animal control and brought to the humane society before making her way to Fort Fluffy Butt. Today, Othokent is a powerful reminder that fear doesn’t mean weakness — sometimes it simply means a bird has survived more than we’ll ever know.

Princess Peach

Princess Peach (peaches) is a Buff Orpington with a more reserved, steady nature than her sister Daisy. Less driven by curiosity, she prefers to quietly observe rather than rush headfirst into everything. Still, where you see one sister, you almost always see the other — Princess Peach is the calm constant beside Daisy’s chaos, the yin to her yang.

She came to Fort Fluffy Butt alongside Daisy after the pair were surrendered to a shelter for supposedly being “mean” to other chickens. In reality, both sisters have been nothing but wonderful additions to the flock — social, gentle, and easy to integrate.

Princess Peach brings balance wherever she goes. While Daisy asks all the questions and demands the treats, Princess Peach stays close, grounding the moment and proving that sometimes the quieter presence is just as important.

Raven

Raven is a small Barnyard Mix with fluffy little feet. Timid and soft-spoken, she has a way of fading into the background so completely that you can almost forget she’s there. Raven carries herself with a gentle presence, moving quietly through the flock without drawing attention to herself.

She hatched from one of a small batch of fertilized barnyard eggs during a time when Brahma Mama was broody. From the very beginning, Brahma Mama raised Raven herself, proving to be an exceptional mother to the tiny chick. That early care shaped Raven into the calm, little bird she is today.

Raven may be easy to overlook, but her story is a sweet reminder of the quiet successes — of good mother hens, gentle upbringings, and chickens who don’t need to be loud to belong.

Senerae

Senerae is a Cinnamon Queen with an endlessly inquisitive nature and a habit of being exactly where you least expect her — and exactly where you’re going. For the longest time, we joked that she was more like a cat than a chicken: curious, observant, and always involved. That is, until Daisy came along and stole her title as the most inquisitive chicken in the flock.

She’s one of the original four hens raised at Fort Fluffy Butt, growing up alongside Brahma Mama, Kelenia, and Znork. From the very beginning, Senerae played an important role in shaping the flock’s dynamic — bold, engaged, and deeply aware of everything happening around her.

As a chick, her favorite place to be was perched on our backs like a tiny parrot, happily riding along and supervising whatever task was at hand. That same curiosity still defines her today, making Senerae a constant, familiar presence and a living piece of the flock’s foundation.

Shellie Shellproper

Shellie Shellproper is a Mille Fleur Belgian Bearded d’Uccle Bantam and the tiniest life of the party. Her goofy little run — thanks to her extravagant leg feathers — makes her impossible to miss, especially when she’s sprinting across the yard yelling about the latest coop gossip. If she’s not literally flying the entire length of the run (20+ feet at a time), she’s glued to her best friend, Ellie Shellproper.

Despite her small size, Shellie is fearless and athletic. She came to Fort Fluffy Butt as a stray from a shelter, which is no surprise considering she can easily lift her tiny body and clear six-foot fences like it’s nothing. Thankfully, Fort Fluffy Butt is fully enclosed — otherwise, she absolutely would’ve escaped on us too.

Her name comes from a long-running inside joke. When Mr. Fort Fluffy Butt once misheard a podcast title (Thou Shall Prosper) as “Tom Shellproper,” the joke was born. Later, when this little Belgian came into our lives, the name Shellie Shellproper slipped out — and the Shellproper legacy officially expanded into the flock.

Sprout

Sprout is a Pekin Duck with a big personality and an even bigger voice. One of the most vocal members of the flock, she’s absolutely hilarious and completely unapologetic about what she loves. Every morning, you’ll find her posted at the fence with Daisy, patiently waiting for her spinach — and loudly announcing her excitement the entire time. Spinach is life. Papa is also life.

Sprout’s story begins with a rescue that broke our hearts. She and her brother were taken in after a woman reached out for help when her son brought home two ducklings from his high school. A child had been trying to sell them, and the teenagers were throwing the ducklings across the room. We immediately stepped in and brought them home, naming them Brussel and Sprout.

The two were inseparable — the most bonded ducks we’ve ever met. Sadly, Brussel passed away, and later we also lost our other duck, Raz, leaving Sprout alone. Thankfully, Sprout was raised alongside chickens and found comfort and belonging within the flock. With the hens by her side and her papa giving her extra love and care, Sprout has grown into a happy, confident solo duck — loud, proud, and very much adored.

Znork

Znork is a Dark Brahma and the calm second-in-command beside Brahma Mama. The ultimate gentle giant, she carries herself with quiet confidence and rarely feels the need to assert authority — but when she does, it’s clear she’s every bit as capable as the head hen herself.

She’s one of the original four chickens raised at Fort Fluffy Butt, growing up alongside Brahma Mama, Senerae, and Kelenia. From the beginning, Znork has been a steady presence in the flock, offering balance, strength, and a calming influence rather than dominance.

Her name comes from an early naming mishap inspired by D&D characters. With only four names to choose from at the time, Znork admittedly got the short end of the stick — a fact we lovingly acknowledge to this day. Affectionately known as Znorkie, her name may be ridiculous, but she wears it proudly, embodying the idea that leadership doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful.
